Much of the information here is in Wikipedia, whose entry for Santa includes a picture of Saint Nicholas looking like a miserable old bugger.
I have no idea if Nicholas married, but I believe the early church was not hot on celibacy, so I guess there is a reasonable chance that Nicholas had children. Even if he did not, there would certainly be descendants from his relatives. So, somewhere in that region, there may well be people now living who are descended from, or at least related to, Father Christmas! And some of those may be among the Syrian refugees we have welcomed (or not) to this country.
There is a nice little phrase that is often bandied about at this time of year – “Peace on Earth, Good will to all men”.
Nowadays, I prefer to leave off the “men”, since I would not like to be accused of lacking in goodwill to over half of our population! And, whilst I realise it is a counsel of perfection, which I certainly have not attained, I would urge you to try to bear goodwill to all, not merely to those who share your beliefs, whether political, religious or philosophical, and not merely those who share your culture or your colour.
I do not expect to post a blog next week. So I will next be back in the New Year.
And finally, give a thought to the doctors and nurses and others who will be working hard while we are enjoying ourselves.
